How much Motrin in mgs can you take in 24 hours?

I have killer back pain for the past few days, and nothing is helping. I'm calling my doctor tomorrow but I just don't want to cause damage to myself by taking too much.

I have herniated discs L-4 & L-5. Plus issues with S1. I take 2700 mgs of Gabapentin, Tylenol and Motrin. My doctors want to treat the pain without narcotic meds so for the past few days I have been in so much pain and I can hardly move now.

Currently I've got a heating pad on my back but I just need some relief.

If anyone has suggestions or could answer my question I would really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Jeez, this drives me crazy. Gabapentine is a joke for pain and 2700mg a day is a huge freaking dose. It can cause seizures (even though it is used to treat them but at much lower doses) at those dose levels. It is not a pain medication (it's for freaking Epilepsy) and this is a huge problem using drugs like Gabapentine off label (use to treat a condition other than what the drug was meant for) as there are no dosing guidelines, since it's not freaking for pain... ARRRG!!!

Ok I am calming down now.... Ibuprofen daily dose limit is suggested at 2400mg per day unless under the guidance of a physician (so they can monitor your vitals and organ functions and such) in which case you can bump it up to a max of 3200mg (in 800 mg every 6 hour doses) You can take Tylenol concurrently since they function differently, but beware cause acetaminophen is real garbage and you should keep your dose as low as possible. Most sensible doctors limit Tylenol daily intake to 3000mg daily or less. They tried to change it officially (the FDA recommendation) to 3000mg but the drug companies balked at how much it would cost to change labels and recall on shelf stock on everything that contains Tylenol and shot the more sensible limit down. So it still stands at an official limit of 4000mg daily, but as little as possible is the best advice. Much more dangerous than ibuprofen...

You may want to consider other drugs types if you are afraid of narcotics, things like muscle relaxants or a prescription anti inflammatory may be of some help. If the doctors are afraid of the narcotics, perhaps you should try other medical professionals who are not...

There is an off label, non narcotic drug I might suggest for pain. It's still going to need an Rx from somebody, but you have a better shot of some relief than with Garbagepentine. It's called Elavil or amitryptiline (generic). It's actually an anti depressant, but many people find it helpful for pain, it will definitely help you sleep, and you are probably getting pretty depressed anyhow if your doctors aren't helping you any more than you say....

If anyone mentions surgery - RUN. Especially if it's somebody who suggested 2700mg of a seizure medication for back pain Hang in there, I hope you are feeling better soon...

ps....You may want to do a net search on Gabapentine (aka Neurontin) and look up it's scandal ridden history of being pushed by the manufacturer for every condition under the sun and all the trouble they got in for kickbacks and such. Make a copy for your doctor although I am sure he knows. He's got you on a monster dose and you have to tapered off Gabapentine, you can not suddenly stop taking it (that can be very dangerous) but you need to get off that crap.

Source(s): 20 years in chronic pain and the dose limits are everyplace. Wkipedia has good info on Gabapentine.
