For some reason my when I click onto System Preferences it doesn't open. What the hell happened?

I restarted my Macbook and when I clicked on system preferences on the apple icon menu and the dock Icon, nothing happened. This has never happened before..so how can I remedy this without calling Apple or taking it to an Apple Nerd?

Update:

I am running snow leopard and recently Apple sent me the wrong disc and I had to go to Apple and have them re install and wipe all my data. I don't want to have to reboot anything plus I have never backed up anything before so this kind of makes me nervous losing 3000 songs again. Is there another way?

    For OS 10.6.8....

In a Finder window, go to the home folder and select Library and select Preferences.

    Trash this file....

    com.apple.systempreferences.plist

If that doesn't resolve the issue, use Pacifist to extract a fresh "System Preferences.app" from the Mac OS X Install DVD.
