"""is this already too slow?"""
("Already"? The need for memory is not related to how long since you paid for the computer. It is related to your types of tasks, how many apps you use at once, how many tabs you use when browsing.)
It is the perfect minimum memory to open Mac OS 10.9.1. It leaves no more memory for anything else. Apple isn't alone in telling people that the OS only needs a small amount of memory, when that is really too little to use a few apps as well as the OS. Microsoft does the same thing. In fact, I rather blame the public. If Apple said you need 4GB memory, the majority of folks would assume Windows is better for claiming it runs fine with 2GB.
To see if you have a real need for more memory, open "Activity Monitor". Then look near the bottom of the AM window for tabs. Select the "System Memory" tab. Now look at "Swap used". If it is 1GB or more, you do need more memory for your type of tasks.
