Why do people that know nothing insist on putting me down just because I suggest things that are different?

Some supposed guitar people on here tell me I don't know anything. They recommend junk like lemon oil for fretboards, and then have the nerve to tell me that mineral oil or boiled linseed oil is wrong. Why? I've restored and rebuilt hundreds of guitars, from the 20's to the 2010's, and everywhere in between. Not only that, why do they have to be jerks about it? Sow we disagree, okay, that's cool, but calling me names and such, that's totally uncalled for.

You are right of course. It is simply unheard of that some apparently seem be unable to disagree in a polite and respectful manner. There should definitely be room for opinions and different points of view.

Unfortunately, there are always people trolling. If one of these individuals have found out that they don't like you, there is nothing to do but ignore them ... it is a waste of energy to answer back or try to use reason or logic.

If you have issues with one of the knowledgeable people here, you will find that they don't take a personal stance and that a disagreement can be maintained as long as you are able to argue why you hold a certain point of view.

That said, there are one or two that sadly seem to shoot from the hip from time to time and can be quick to judge others ... not very elegant in my book.

As for the discussion about fretboard oil and maintenance. It would perhaps "help your case" if you told the community that you have used certain things - like such and such oil - with good results. It may also be a good idea to reference other sources - just a thought?

Lemon oil seems to be the preferred choice from what I can see. I've used that for many years and have had no issues what so ever. The point is to use just a drop or two but I suppose that goes for any other oil also :-)

"Lemon" oil often turns out to be a light mineral oil with a lemon fragrance, right? So it's probably not 'junk' as long as it isn't silicone-based.

Some people even use eucalyptus or olive oil on the neck. Some rarely use oil at all, ha ha!

There are, unfortunately, a lot of people on sites like this who are a lot less knowledgeable than they'd have you believe. And there are a lot of people who think they're superior beings for answering someone's question or enjoy trolling. Some people just have strong opinions, like that 16 year old guy who was asking about liking Taylor Swift and got told he needed professional help...

Perhaps if you need specifically guitar-related advice it would be wise to visit a guitar website or ask someone you know who's also a guitarist. Ultimate Guitar's reputation has gone downhill somewhat but there are still some very experienced players on the forums who know what they're on about.

Because a true expert would never use linseed oil on a fingerboard, lemon oil has been the professionals choice for hundreds of years for the treatment of fingerboards.
