How to get to know him?

Theres this guy at my school that I have never talked to directly but we have the same friends so a couple times we stood in the same circle/group before school. We stand in the gym lobby in the morning and I can tell when he notices me I can see out of the corner of my eye he will glance at me a couple times so I will look over and make eye contact and then he stops looking my way :/ But I actually want to talk to him but too shy to go up to him. So how can I like hint him I want him to come talk to me?
