Can you adopt with a misdemeanor?

I got arrest 5 years ago for a misdemeanor in domestic violence reckless conduct. I haven't had an issues with the law, wasn't sent to jail or had to pay any fines. I was just subject to 1 year probation that I had no issues completing. Would I be able to adopt a child in India if I were to try to adopt? I was young back then and was foolish in how I acted and regret everything I did. I have tried looking everywhere online about it and all it does is talks about felonies and other issues that will sometimes cause it to fall through. thanks a ton :)

Arrest happened in Maine..

I checked for you and it seems the felony must not have been in the last 5 years (you may be just barely in the clear or months from it)

you can check for yourself here: https://www.childwelfare.gov/systemwide/laws_polic...

I checked and India doesn't have any laws against it, because countries do sometimes have laws about who can adopt their children...and then there's the personal opinion of who's overseeing the adoption, but in my humble opinion you seem genuine and if you approach it the same way you seem to have here (openly, honestly, and seeing it as something you foolishly did when you were a lot less mature, and you're smarter now) I don't think it would be a problem

Not sure it would stop a adoption, background checks are done by them though and I'm sure it will affect any decision made,it certainly is not a incentive to go in your favor.

Misdemeanor may mean they're going to ask you some uncomfortable questions, but it shouldn't stop the process. Whether or not you succeed, that's another matter.
