What will happen if I placed a sd card from my rooted phone into my new phone which is not rooted?
i bought a new phone and want to put a sd card from my old phone (which is rooted) into the new one (which is not rooted) will that harm my new phone or should i format it and put it into my new phone?
as formatting it will erase all the data i need on it.

No. It wont harm.
Coz all the root or os related info will be in the internal memory of your previous phone and not on the sd card. You can simple put it in new phone
If you are still afraid, back it up on the computer. Then format and put in new phone and later move selected data like pics and musics

It will not harm your new phone in anyway. First of all unable for an android application to actually take over your device, it will have to be rooted and gain SU. Dont expect your new phone to become magically rooted.

All android apps run in a sandbox so it can not execute commands to modify anything outside of that sandbox(such as your OS). Think of it as some deadly gas inside a container, if it is sealed then it cant do harm but if you open(granting it su for example) it then it will cause harm.
