Dogs and finding much needed drugs UK?

We have a dog in our family that requires Vetmedin and Cardalis on a regular basis and we are paying a fortune for them. Vets where we live will only provide a prescription once or two monthly with a charge of £10.00 and then the price of the drugs on top which is astronomical. They will not issue a prescription to take elsewhere.

Is there another way to get hold of these drugs and why will the Vets in this area not provide a prescription that can be bought elsewhere?

Update:

THE DOG HAS CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE WE THINK BUT HAS STARTED HAVING FITS. THANKS TO ALL WHO ARE HELPING WITH ADVICE ON THIS QUESTION

Because they will lose money. Yes, you can find those drugs on line, look harder and change vets.

That's a shame. Someone at my vet's office recommended a compounding pharmacy so I could get Vetmedin at a much cheaper cost. I just googled Cardalis and it's a combination of Benazapril and spironolactone, both available cheaply as generics in the US. Vets do make money reselling pharmaceuticals, but it seems they could be compassionate like my vet and allow clients to save some money when their dog has a chronic condition. I'm not sure how it works in the UK, but I got all my dogs meds from the human pharmacy and the compounding pharmacy with prescriptions provided by my vet. Maybe you could plead with your's. Good luck.

@dorothy s: I can tell you the dog has congestive heart failure. Vetmedin is the best medicine for this and it's very expensive. It's often used in combination with a blood pressure medicine (like Benazepril) and a diuretic (like spironolactone).

Dorothy, the OP's dog has congestive heart failure. She knows it and knows what drugs he needs. Reading is fundamental.

To the OP, are there any cataloges you can order the meds from?

I live in the USA, so my answer may not help. Yes, those are prescription medicines. Here, in the USA, if you ask the vet (or dr) for a prescription, he must give it to you, it's the law. I do not know what the laws are in the UK regarding this.

We can get our dogs meds from 1-800PetMeds, Drs. Fosters & Smith. I also had a pharmacy card from my local drugstore for my dog that had the same condition as your and was on the same meds.

Source(s): I had a dog with CHF. He was on vetmedin, sprionolactone, just to name a few. Plus, supplements recommended by the vet to help the prescription meds work more efficiently.

Any UK vet will provide a prescription to take elsewhere but will charge £10 or a bit more to do so. Vets don't provide any prescription if getting the drugs from him so I am not understanding the prescription charge plus the drugs.

If he writes out an actual prescription and charges you for it then it is your right to take it elsewhere to get the drugs you need.

Get in contact with the Canine Chemist at Hyperdrug. Been using them for years and long before internet and they are very helpful over the phone. They understand the whole process of customer rights and will help you sort this out.

They are the cheapest place to buy your medications from also.

My friend, I was only able to find the Vetmedin Chewables for you at Amazon 5 mg. 50 count for $86.69.

If you'd like, I'll try searching for the other one again.

Here's the direct link for the Vetmedin for you.

Edit: I went back to check some more and discovered that Vetmedin can only be sold in the US. Lorraine seems to have a viable answer for you. I didn't see her answer until I came back to edit mine ... I don't read others' answers before answering myself.

Sorry I couldn't have been of more help to you. I wish you all the best in finding what you need for a less expensive cost to you. Our pets do have a tendency to become like our children ... we always want what is best them.

I too am paying a fortune for Vetmedin [ £23.80 for 50 ] and Cardalis [£1 per tablet], I could get them much cheaper online but my vet wants £18 per item per 3 month prescription, vetmedin not too bad as it lasts 50 days but can I get a generic non prescription replacement for cardalis anyhere ?

We need to know your dogs problem, before anyone can help.

I think that vets are obliged to issue a prescription to enable you to buy online.

Although, I cannot compare my dogs problem with your dogs health problems. I was able to purchase remedies online for a fraction of the price.

Change your vet and give us more information please.
