I believe that it is a scam.
To my knowledge, it is just a variant of a typical fake check scam.
The scammer will send you a check with directions to cash it and then forward most of the proceeds out of the country to the supposed seller of the car. In reality, you are just sending the money back to the scammer, there is no car and the check was fake.
After the check bounces, you are responsible for covering it and you could even face criminal fraud charges yourself.
