why does my car turn off when i put it into drive?

I have had my car for about 2 years. And am fixing it constantly. Its just a little be a beater. Chevy Cavalier 94. It has been running fine lately except when I push on the break too hard my car stalled. Afterwards it started up right away and was fine. It did this for about 3 days. Only like once a day. Anyway, I pulled into the gas station to fill up, as my car was empty, anyway it stalled out just like it had been. And it started right back up but every time I put it in drive,he car would shut off. Each time starting right back up. I was able to reverse out of the way of the gas pumps, and ended up driving it home in second gear. Also about a half a mile before I got to the gas station my car jerked. like as it went faster instead of shifting automatically and smoothly it jerked, more than usual. very loudly. Anyway just wondering if anyone knows what would be wrong, WHY IS MY CAR STALLING WHEN I PUT IT INTO DRIVE? but its not affected when i put it into any other gear.
