What would happen if you put water in an empty soda can, and then put it in the fridge to get cold?

My brother says it gets polluted.

Do you agree with him, and if not, what do you think/know happens to it?

Maybe it gets polluted if you have a very dirty refrigerator. Otherwise, the water will eventually become the temperature of the inside of the refrigerator.

No more polluted that the soda got when it was in the can.

Just what is it that you brother thinks makes its way into the can besides the water?

True, the water reaches thermal equilibrium with the inside of the fridge. First, the water absorbs any soda left in the can. Then, it absorbs volatile hydrocarbons released as odors from whatever else is in the fridge, especially things like onions. Finally, it absorbs some aluminum from the can, depending on what's in the water to react with it.

The water gets cold. It does not get polluted although it might taste weird considering it previously had a carbonated beverage in it.

He may be right. Aluminum has been linked to Altzheimers.
