I consider the construction of a viable off-world colony to be the most critical long-term goal for the preservation of human civilization. I think that will be easier in an orbital colony than on the face of a moon or planet. Toward that end, development of space-based industry is necessary, especially when it comes to mining raw materials from asteroids and other sources. Also, we need to develop and pre-position the technology to nudge asteroids and/or comets from their orbits, since there is one with our name on it out there somewhere, and a 10 km rock striking Earth will just ruin everyone's day.

Well, I'm hoping for a moon base, and a trip to Mars, and ideally a space elevator - but I'm not sure I want Sam or the guy who almost killed him involved....
