How does a cars rear main seal work?

How does it keep oil from leaking out, and not have the crankshaft destroy the seal while its spinning?

It's a seal made (usually) from a type of rubber compound and has a spring inside to hold it tight around the crankshaft. The crankshaft is polished and is very smooth, so there's not a lot of wear on the seal.
