I think this is different than the events preceding WW2. Germany had a goal of domination in Europe. Russia is acting to regain the power and influence of the USSR. It is more a political chess match than a violent precursor to total war. For decades the US and Russia were considered co-equal super-powers, but since the mid-nineties, we have run away with the 'contest'. Putin is definitely not alone in his wish to regain the old glory. All we have to do is anticipate the next move on the board, and not over-react. Over-reacting or under-reacting will play into their hands. I feel pretty good about our position. I heard Boehner talk about "strengthening Obama's hand" in this battle. So while all the talking heads can continue the left-right mudslinging, the real members of government are working together. That is a good sign. Be optimistic.

I don't see a guy bent on world conquest, but a guy who realizes the Americans have broken ever single agreement they made during Glasnost, and taking precautions against the further creep of U.S. global hegemony into his own country. Putin want to save russian people that live in Ukraine from faschist anti-russian goverment, he is on stand by, he wouln't atack Ukraine, he is just securing area of Ukraine where russian people are, he does not want to start ww3, but if new ukrainean goverment goes against russian people which live in Ukraine he will have no choise but to fight fire with fire
