Going to Bangkok in April. What's to do?
I've been there as a younger guy, and now my wife wants to go. No guest houses or anything for me this time (too old).
But for people that want the "ride the elephants" or even beach escapes for a day, what would you suggest?

There is a lot around Bangkok to see. Join tours, book them when you arrive through your hotel or hire a car and drive some of the new excellent roads outside of Bangkok (not Bangkok itself)
You can go Pattaya, Ayutthaya and the floating markets all within a easy day trip from Bangkok.

Kevin is, of course, on target. Just get the Lonely Planet guidebook and USE it. Everything we could tell you here is in that book.
Do take your wife for a walk in Patpong after dark both for the mass of trinkets and so she can peek into the pole dancing bars to see how the other half lives. I would not take a Western wife one night on Walking Street in Pattaya; she will be traumatized.
Roadhouse BBQ is excellent for a dash of western food and there are many of all kinds in BKK. Go 40km West to Nakhon Pathom, stay overnight in the Rose Garden Teak bungalow and see the elephant show and ride elephant there. Very simple way to get that experience. It will be HOT in April everywhere. No sex workers around there.
Again I say, if your wife is the typical protected feminine rights gal of America, just keep her away from the pole dancing bars and sex worker street show in Nana, for example. I enjoy watching such ladies, no offence to you or her, in pole dancing bars with their wide eyed sneers at lovely YOUNG girls fawning over drunken old fat guys and their pretense at being repulsed but secretly wanting to know "how would it be."
Anyway, have a great time, use taxis and jump from air cond taxi to air cond buildings and miss April HEAT.
