Wheres the best place to get a rebuilt Vortec 305?

I'm in the DFW area and I'm looking for a fresh rebuilt 305 Vortec for my 97 gmc. I'm looking to spend no more than $1500 and if I can get a 350 with the computer flashed for the same price I'll do that. I've already looked at Blanies, City motors and LKQ. Just trying to see what else is out there. And if theres a budget friendly motor swap for the 350?

Blaines and City are the lowest of the low when you are talking about quality. Those guys aren't engine builders...They're housekeepers. Disassembling an engine, giving all the parts a bath and then doing a quick and real sloppy bore and/or hone job with some new bearings and valve jobs with grinding stones and sloppy valve guide clearances is hardly engine building. They don't even check oil clearances or replace rod bolts, and THAT's a BIG reason why they OFTEN can't keep their engines together for more than 2 nights even in the super low budget "Bomber" classes at local dirt tracks. Go do a leak down test on one of their freshly honed engines after 500 or even a thousand miles. You'll see what I mean about sloppy. ;)

Buy yourself a dual gauge leak down gauge, take a stout air compressor, and go do a leak down test on a couple of used engines at LKQ. Tell them you are looking for "a good runner". I'd put a virgin factory engine with miles on it LONG before I would ever spend money at Blaines or City.

Source(s): Camshaft design/manufacture, full competition race engine building/development, failure analysis of internal engine components, Carb blueprinting, drivability/MPG/durability expert, chem analysis of fuel, super-tuner. I'll help/advise you, make/sell you cams, etc. I'm MUCH too busy to baby-sit you for free. I get MANY emails from Yahoo Answers. A few buyers from here, even. That said, I WILL answer a private email or two, but please don't slam me with endless emails asking endless questions.

I would bet LKQ can help you with the 350 conversion, too.

Your local Criagslist would be more helpful. Anonymous people in computerland aren't familiar with your city and its engine shops.
