Teachers holding us after school?

Okay so my teacher always is holding us after school, and sometimes I miss the bus, for example one kid in our class will be talking and the rest of us are not and he chooses to hold all of us after school, is this legal in CA? Also what if I miss the bus and have to walk home, and get hit by a car or something? Will the school be held responsible?

    Ask the teacher if you can go to the restroom a couple minutes before class ends. And leave when school dismisses. Or say you forgot something in your locker.
