HELP!?!?!?!?!? LANDLORD LOST MY RENT!!!!!!!!?

My apartments went through some weird system change and they had EVERYBODY'S rent messed up. Like it was double the normal amount. I paid my rent March 3rd of this month. I brought in a money order because they stopped accepting online payments. I gave them a money order for $480! Actually I handed it directly to the MANAGER. & as I began to walk out she asked me if I had put my apt number on my rent. I told her I forgot and as I walked back to do it she said to me "apt. 124, right?" I replied yes I WATCHED HER WRITE IT ON MY MONEY ORDER. 2 weeks later I come home to a notice to vacate for non payment of rent. I JUST cleaned my car out yesterday so i KNOW FOR FACT i no longer have the reciept she gave me that was attached to my money order. WHAT DO I DO?!?!?!?!?!?!

I should not have to pay rent twice because they are messing up!

Wow - this is just one of life's terrible lessons. I've been a landlord - and I know sometimes life can get hectic - but losing money orders is really not acceptable. Your lack of her handwritten receipt is not a problem. The place where you bought your Money Order has copies of the blank ones, and you can trace it. They will be able to help you by photocopying it front and back (if it was cashed/deposited in a bank) If it wasn't cashed - then you may be able to get the funds back (as most money orders state that there is a time limit for cashing their product) Meanwhile, you need to talk directly with the OWNERS/MANAGEMENT company - and explain this to them. If you at least saved your stub from the money order - you will have proof that you at least bought and paid for a M/O of $480.

If that was not the exact amount of the owed rent - then you might have some explaining to do. As far as them raising the rent - they can only do that after they've sent you by registered mail and notification of the fact that your rent was being raised, and per your rental/lease agreement - that is usually with a three month notice. If these people are not so professional as to keep records or hire competent managers - then you should start looking for a another place to squat.

What do you think the receipt was for? It wasn't for throwing out two weeks after you paid your rent. You have no proof that you paid your rent. You could get proof from the issuer of the money order, but I presume you would need the serial number of the money order. If the issuer is a small operation see if they can help you.

Have you talked to them about it? Remind them that you paid it? If you haven't try talking to the same lady you gave it to two weeks ago, maybe she just forgot. Don't let them know you lost them receipt yet.

In the future be very careful about keeping your receipts in a safe place.

You have to go where you bought the money order and ask them who is the issuer of the money orders. You then have to go to their office and hopefully they can pull it up. Cost about $5 They will give you a printed copy of the money order.
