We have a population of 23 million people and our States have similar populations to each of the American States. California has more people than the whole of Australia.
Why do we need states at all? We should have two layers of government, Federal and Regional. Regional governments would be expanded councils covering all the current Council issues plus some of the State issues. The Federal Government would take over the rest of the State issues. We would also get rid of all the royal families of State Governors and Territory Administrators.
We need to keep the State boundaries for Sheffield Shield cricket and State of Origin rugby league but there is no need for them otherwise.

Perhaps if we had more States each child would get a better education and learn how to spell or use spellcheck before posting questions on YA.
We are constantly told that things are more expensive in this country because we do not have sufficient size/population. Economically this suggestion is lunacy.
The only jobs that would be created would be public service jobs. Meaning more taxes. Australia is a federation of the States. Changing a foundation stone of the Commonwealth would be nigh on impossible.

There are not enough people to support that many states.
Australia is the same size as the United States.
The Population of OZ is only 22 million people where the U.S. has over 300 million.

I think we should get rid of all the states and territories and just have a single Federal government and maybe a hundred or so regional governments. Our state goverments are mostly fairly useless and corrupt.

Ridiculous idea, the population is so small it could not afford the governing of any more states or territories.
