Awkwardness comes from lack of familiarity with someone. It means you are just starting to date or you got married too soon to someone you don't know well enough to feel at ease with.
Time will fix this, or in time you find that you don't have much in common and you can't be yourself around them.
You just ease into the relationship if you are only dating, and with time you will either get over the shyness and awkward moments, or you will find you are not suited for one another.
