why do many software programs update for a higher versions-new- but ignore older versions?

for example many say now that it wil work only on 64 bit or windows 8 etc., --- ok what about those who have lower versions and cant go for upper levels

64bit has been around for a long time, and since with 32bit, you can only use up to 3GB of RAM, it's going to be obsolete soon.

The other issue is that Microsoft is pushing people to abandon older versions of Windows. If they had their way, everybody would get the piece of crap that Win8 is.

On the other hand though, most of the time you don't need to actually bend to that. There are many alternatives to commercial software, and as a non-gamer, there's no good reason any longer to even use Windows as your operating system. I like Win7, but if I didn't play Windows-only games, I'd probably have switched to Linux a long time ago, at least on my main machine.

If you had told us what software specifically you're talking about, we could've suggested alternatives.

    for commercial reasons

creating updates costs money and more so if they have to be tested on various older versions.

it's also a good way to get people to upgrade and pay for the same software twice
