Can I learn how to ice skate on my own?

I was wondering if it's possible to learn ice skating without a coach, since it costs a lot. Just like how I learned how to ride a bicycle on my own ??

I'm going to agree with what others have said.

If you want to ice skate, and only ice skate, then off course! It's a skill to teach yourself, much like riding a bike. It's fun to do with friends and some rinks even offer basic free lessons. Ice skating doesn't require a coach.

However, if you wan't to learn to figure skate, then that's not a very good idea. It's really a lose-lose situation. Although it is possible to teach yourself the basics, you will definitely pick up bad habits and learn things with incorrect technique, and that will lead you to certain injury as you advance.

Besides, if you're going regularly to the rink (and therefore paying the entry fee), At most of the rinks I've been to, the weekly group lessons won't cost much more than the entry fee. If you want to learn to figure skate, your best bet is to do the affordable group lessons for a while, then after a few terms if you're still wanting to advance, you can consider saving for a private coach.

    Best of luck!

Depends on what you mean by "ice skating". If you mean figure skating, many have said so already and the answer is no. Teaching yourself how to figure skate increases risks of an injury without a coach, and poor technique. If you're not planning to figure skate, then yes, you can teach yourself.

If you only want to skate for fun and arent planning on competing or learning any jumps, it is fine to teach yourself how to skate forward and backward and stuff like that. If you ever want to reach a high level or compete, or if you want to learn things like jumps and spins, you will need to learn the proper technique, which will require lessons. Group lessons are cheap and good to start out with, and maybe you can eventually save up for private lessons.

If by "ice skating" you mean just basic movement - yes, it is possible to teach yourself.

If by "ice skating" you mean figure skating, no, it is not. And Youtube videos are a bad idea to teach anything.

Agreed. Also it all depends on how good your trying to be or if you just want to skate for recreational purposes.

If you want to learn then do it by your self.

But if you want to master, seek assistance on top of practicing heavily

  • yes you can just go on the ice try it and no matter how many times you fall get up and keep on doing it until you get it right
