Can you teach yourself HTML and CSS and get a job?

I am currently a special education teacher in New York City and I was recently diagnosed with Asperger's (I am also an introvert). I really need to change careers badly but I am having some difficulty as I do not make enough money consistently to take courses to do the things I think I would be good at and I am not financially able to get a loan (I am still paying off loans). I have a B.A. in Psychology and a M.A. in Early Childhood Ed/Special Ed, but I have been to grad school three times. Lately, I have been thinking of jobs I could do without returning to school and paying exorbitant tuition but would not be overwhelming and would not demand so much social interaction. I have heard that there are people who have taught themselves how to write code and were able to find employment without going to school. Is this true? I have also heard most IT companies want people with a computer science degree or an IT background. I used to be in Internet advertising and magazine production/traffic before becoming a teacher, but the field has changed so much I cannot return to the field without knowing HTML, CSS, Flash or Java, at least, which I didn't have to know before. So again, just in case my question was lost in all the ranting:

I have heard that there are people who have taught themselves how to write code and were able to find employment without going to school. Is this true?

Thank you for your kind and thoughtful (and relevant) responses.

Boy, that's a tough one. 25+ years ago, small companies just wanted a warm body who knew the difference between "IF" "AND" and "OR" and could write in proper programming syntax.

Now, just to get in the door you at least need a BA or BS and years of on-the-job training. These days, with an AA -- they'll barely talk to you.

Yes, you CAN teach yourself how to write code. You'll need a pretty extensive proofing ground -- portfolio -- of your capabilities and start small, applying to the tiny companies.

You may decide to go independent.

    Luck!
