For Stage IV (distal metastases), the 5 year survival rate is about 4%.

But if the metastases are localized, it can be 30%.
Chemotherapy kills individual cancer cells, reducing the number of active cancer cells in a tumor, thereby shrinking the tumor.
Depending on how the patient reacts, chemotherapy (probably in conjunction with surgery and radiation) may extend the patients life and may actually cure the patient.
