Do I have to make my personal statement the the number of pages the application limits you to?

I'm applying to a summer REU that's requiring me to submit a personal statement limited to 3 double spaced pages. Do I have to make it 3 pages because i don't have any experiences to share as a first year and few skills. My research interests, skills, and why I'm applying only covers a page. I only have two more topics that the application tells me to only briefly talk about. I'll get at most a page out of that. So are two pages good?

If you can say clearly everything you want to say in 2 pages, then use 2 pages. If the statement is "limited to 3 pages," #3 pages is the maximum and there is no minimum. Some people write like Faulkner and others write like Hemingway, and if you are a Hemingway then there's no point trying to write as many pages as a Faulkner would in your place.

However, I encourage you to think seriously about whether you are leaving anything significant out and whether you are saying enough about the things you do discuss that readers will easily understand what you're getting at. Sometimes - although not always! - it can be beneficial to add words and even to say the same thing twice.

When it comes down to it, though, if you have 2 pages of things to say, it is reasonable to submit 2 pages.

    Good luck with your application.

Imagine having to read a foot-tall stack of personal statements.
