Why do I see numbers and letters when I play music?

Question

Whenever I play music.. red numbers float on the sheet music. I've played the violin since 6 years. I recently took note of this because my dad filmed me during my orchestra concert and I noticed that I wasn't looking at the music for a majority of the concert. Also, one time I had an old folk song stuck in my head so I closed my eyes and sung the piece in my head ..and while I did that letters appeared in my mind and I was able to figure out the song by ear. I'm not sure if everyone can do this or if I'm just an "oddball" lol. Why do I see numbers and letters when I play music? I'm 18 so I'm not sure whether I should get this check out or if it's normal

Thanks for answering my question! Wow I've never heard of this but it sounds amazing! I think it's just that you're so used to seeing letters and numbers on sheet music you automatically see the same In your mind! I'm no expert so I might be very wrong about this, just keep that in mind.

There is actually a mental ability where people recognize smells with colors or tastes with numbers. In your case, you might recognize music with numbers. We talked about it briefly in psychology because it is so rare, I don&#x27;t remember the name of it. With some research and mentioning it to a doctor, you can probably find a specialist to learn more. It doesn&#x27;t make you odd and isn&#x27;t a disease, I actually find it fascinating!

Synesthesia.  It's fairly uncommon but not unknown.
