I have not tried khat but I had tried chewing betel leaves ( Indonesian and Malaysian called it as pinang) and very popular in some other south eastern asian countries like Thailand, Vietnam, even Taiwan etc. middle east while some western countries and Europe like to chew tobacco. All for its medicinal benefits mostly for analgesic and antiseptic properties *.
