a ball with a horizontal speed of 1.25m/s rolls off a bench 1.00m above the floor.
How long will it take the ball to hit the floor?
How far from a point on the floor directly below the edge of the bench will the ball land?

The clue to answering all questions of this type is to treat the vertical and horizontal motions separately as they have no effect on each other. In other words whether or not the ball is moving sideways then it will take the same time to fall 1 metre. (see below for qualification to this).
Hence find the time taken to fall one metre using s=ut + 1/2 at^2. The u in this case refers to the vertical motion and initially this is zero. So s + 1/2 at^2 s is one metre and a is either 9.8 or 10 depending on what you use.
therefore 1 = 1/2 x 10 x t^2 giving 0.2 = T^2 Find the square root of 0.2 and you have one of your answers. The ball is travelling at 1.25m/s and has the time you have just found to travel sideways. Use distance = speed x time to find your second answer.
!!!!! If the ball was travelling really fast then we could not apply this as the earth's surface would curve away below the ball and the ball would take longer to land. Eventually at high enough speeds the curvature of the earth would match the fall of the ball and it would never land. You have just made a satellite. If we tried this at ground level the speed needed would be so high that the ball would become very hot and burn up.

in a 10m/s/s g field it will fall 1m in (20)^0.5 seconds so 1.25*this time is as far as it travels horizontally
