How do you say the exit door in French?

Isn't it la porte de sortie or la port de sortie. Do you keep the e at the end of port since door is feminine?

Thanks for your answers!

You keep the E because the word derives from Latin "porta" (and in that language most words ending in A in the nominative singular are feminine) and because that E was still pronounced in French (with the sound of the E of "le", "ce" or "se") when prinitng was invented, and is still so pronounced under certain conditions in poetry.

"Port" is from Latin "portus", is masculine, and means "harbour".

  • An emergency exit door would be either issue de secours or sortie de secours.

Otherwise, it would be porte de sortie
