I try to do all of the reading assignments when they are assigned. Take some notes on the readings. When finals come around I just review my book notes, terms, power points, and class notes. You just have to review all the info. Pay attention to the study guide if they give you one.
After you take the first test that a professor gives you. You should reflect why did poorly or well on the test so you can do better on the next one. If you bombed the first test, then you need to go to their office hours and ask for their advice on how to do well in the course. After the first test, you should be able to realize what you should pay more attention to for when you are studying for the next test. One class that I had, I realized all I had to do was read the book and pay attention to the terms and the study guides, I didn't need to take notes in class or even show up to class. Other classes I realized I needed to pay more attention to the PowerPoint and my notes. It really depends on the class and how the teacher makes the tests. Sometimes your proffesor will make the test based on the readings, book, handouts, powerpoints, and the lecture and you just have to study everything.
I also use Wikipedia, youtube, and dictionaries if I want to further comprehend something. Sometimes I will read news articles about a topic to further comprehend a topic so I will be more likely to understand it and remember it. You have to take breaks when you are studying to reflect on the information you are taking in, understand why it is important. Try to see the bigger picture and how the information you are studying relates to previous information in your classes and how it relates to the real world.
Making a schedule is also very helpful.
I get really great grades on tests. I'm not that great at essays and doing my homework. I prefer tests.
