Provided you have the land or permission to use someone else,s land, I would write a letter to a few large garden supply companies asking for seeds and tools. A local media should be called to help get volunteers. Even if no company steps up, you can get a lot of seeds on clearance at stores in late spring, and start the garden yourself. If you are out in the garden working, people will walk by and start getting involved. They tell their friends and neighbors, and you,re off and running.

Most community gardens I know of are maintained by those who grow there. They provide the seed and labor for their plot. The city normally provides land and if possible a water supply though that normally doesn't happen. You could communally set up a water tank or water barrels for water collection. Other than that each person is responsible for their section. You also need to set rules on chemicals and such. One thing don't go bonker over Organic. It may sound like a good idea but it is not maintainable. There are many good compromises like using organic chemicals and things like fish milk for fungal diseases. Fish Milk - one tablespoon fish fertilizer, 1 cup milk any kind even sour, 1 quart of water. Mix it and spray it on leaves as soon as plant is transplanted and doing well. Once a week or after a rain. Always water or spray in early morning. Remay is good to cover plants to hide from bugs, like borers that attack cucumbers. It is a light white cloth, bugs are looking for green leaves. Occasional meeting to discuss techniques would also be good. To stave off endless argument have plot contests to see who is right. The proof of the pudding is in the eating as they say.

    I do too.

I've discovered some websites put up by people with similar ambitions:

    http://hyperlocavore.ning.com/

    http://farmmyyard.org/

But... I live out in the sticks, and anybody near me has property of their own...

If you live in town, and have a large yard, with plenty of sunlight... might be possible.

Community gardens have traditionally been established on vacant lots and such... but there's really no reason why we couldn't create gardens somewhere that already has the power and water turned on...

What about starting a meetup group?

Also, a butterfly garden would be cool... we made one in school one year for some elective.

meetup.com or you could go to the Y, schools, or kids/youth groups at local churches or temples or something?
