OBD 2 emission test on OBD 1 Car?

I have a 1995 Firebird that's due for a test. Pre 1997 OBD 1 car owners are told to do a tailpipe test. My OBD port has the 16 pin OBD 2 connector. Can I do the simpler OBD 2 test on my 1995? My Check engine light never comes on but I have had trouble in the past with the tailpipe test.

your '97 bird is obd2. that's the test it will get. you have no control over what takes place there. you either take the test or not.

if one is required in your area. it goes by zip code. not by state.

obd2 was mandated *as of* 96. for the '96 production year. but some '95 platforms are true obd2 as well. the port obviously will dictade the type of test. but that's not in play here. you have an obd2 platform. plain and simple.

You need to check with your state law, OBD 2 was installed after 1996 so usually cars before did not require OBD 2 test since they were not equipped with it. you can only do a OBD 1 test. It is like old cars that don't have seat belts in the back seat. They don't make you install them.

In Florida we don't have any vehicle inspections unless it is a rebuilt.

the car just has to meet the emission standards for that model year, the only way to c/k emisions is to sample at the tail pipe,
