Skyrim follower glitch?

I was on a Quest with Lydia as my follower. At one point I was doing a puzzle and Lydia disappeared. I continued on the quest without realizing it. I got to the end died 3 times and quit the quest. I realized that she was gone after that. I teleported to her and got her to follow me then I saw she had no option to trade, and then she walked away and when I tried to get her to follow me again she said that I already had a follower. Please help

Update:

Already tried an old save file and she wasn't next to me like she should have been

When you lose a follower for no apparent reason (not dead, didn't see the "your follower leaves your service" message) it can happen because they fall into an area they can't path out of, or because for whatever reason they get confused and can't path to you (I've had this happen in a few very large, winding dungeons or caves), or they glitch into a wall because they walked into a trap or something. One way to get them back is to just "wait" for an hour in the last place you saw them. Another way to reset them is to leave and go to the nearest city, steal something, and submit to the guards to pay your fine. You will reset outside the guardhouse, minus any stolen goods, and your follower will be reset beside you. I had to do this once with Cicero and it worked. Question, though, when you teleported to her, where was she? Can't you just reload an earlier save and then go find her where you know she is (the place you teleported to before)? Another thing to maybe try is to do one of the quests that forces your current follower to leave your service (Companions or Dawnguard) and that might clear the "you already have a follower" slot? Then you can go ask her to follow you again. Also, if you are in the middle of certain quests where you have to meet people in certain locations, that might be why she won't come with you, you have to finish those first?

So why don't you load up an earlier save and see what happens then?
