Why is Ukraine and Russia fighting?
So I am a high school student and there has been a lot of news between Ukraine and Russia. My teacher started to talk about the topic, like how Russia is mobilizing their army and are preparing for war. What I don't get is what is going between Ukraine and Russia, why are they fighting? I see on the news about the topic but they don't explain why they're fighting, it just shows news articles about people protesting and armies mobilizing.
Can also someone explain to me why people are protesting and fighting back?

In point form the cold hard facts:
1. The US and EU supported a coup to oust the democractic elected leader (not necessarily a honest one) of the Ukraine to install a person who was favourable to western corporations (including but not limited to Cargil; Monsanto and Chevron)
The Ukraine is in debt, and if the west (meaning the US and EU) have their way, the method of repayment of loans will mean the ordinary people living in the Ukraine will endure austerity measures (meaning they will lose pensions, wage cutbacks and most social services including building of hospitals) to pay back the corrupt bankers and corporations who front this money to begin with. (this is called economic takeover, a term that applies to payment of a loan but the repayment is never satified and a puppet government favourable to the US interests takes over)
2. Natural gas flows from Russia to the EU countries through the Ukraine. The Ukraine then gets their gas supplied at a cut rate that was tied into the lease of the Russian military base in Sevastopol (in the Crimea). When the base became part of Russia, the lease was retired (meaning no more payment)
3. When the people of the Crimea decided to be part of Russia again after their government was overthrown by the US and EU, the Russians responded by saying your gas is not going to be reduced in price and you still owe us about 2 Billion dollars (US currency).
4. Since the Crimea is now part of Russia, other more ethnic parts of Ukraine (about 55%) want the same.
5. The US wants to encircle Russia with military bases as they have in other former Soviet states now independant and pro west. The US and EU also want to control the energy from the Russian pipelines that the Ukraine has.
When you "connect the dots" you can see why the west is threatening the Russians, no different than they have threatened and attacked middle eastern countries over the last few years while using propaganda to convince people they are justified in threatening Russia with yet another US manufactured war.

If you look at a map, Ukraine has a peninsula called Crimea to their south. Most of the people living there are Russians, and they want to be apart of Russia. Russia is basically trying to take over land from Ukraine and is willing to fight for it.

Why didn't Russia object to loss of Ukraine and Crimea when Soviet Union disintegrated in the 1990s?
