Why do I get no picture or sound from the component feed when I hook my DVD recorder to it?

I am going nuts trying to hook up this DVD recorder! I have connected it exactly as shown in the instruction book ... red, white and yellow (IN) on TV Component ... out on the DVD recorder. The DVD screen shows a "Welcome" when it is loading, but then the screen is blue... there is no picture or sound on my TV when I have it switched to Component. I have also tried these connections on Video 1, Video 2, Component 1 and 2...no picture. The only way I see a picture is to have the TV switched to "TV".. but then I can't get the DVD recorder menu to show up!

The instructions say the "easiest" way to do it is with a simple HDMI cable connection. I tried that too. Still no picture or sound.

Anyone have any suggestions?? I have wasted all day on this.

I have the same problem hooking up Direct TV component cables to my VCR. I get a blank screen. And yet it works fine if I hook it up to my TV (analogue). There may be some type of copy protection circuitry. I'm not sure.
