WHY hasn:t australia invent its own alcholic drink?

and don't say yes to bunderberg rum...as rum is not an Australian invention...

I mean cant Australians come up with something !

most of the European countries of sort of national drink.. and so do most of the world.....

and don't say...... beer........any suggestions with what Australians can make their own national spirit?

my suggestions are...

wattle spirit..

gum leaf spirit..

just a few..

Update:

@ saph..yes I agree but there are some bush berries which could be fermented.....no one has tried though..

but then in each plant there is a sugar base..even gum leafes and wattle.

@ brad we do make excellent wines ..but they not excattly a high spirit drink..are they..

Most types of alcohol were already produced before Australia was discovered by Europeans. We shouldn't be focusing on making a new drink, let's just enjoy what we have.

    Carlton Draught is fantastic.

We invented the Hills Hoist, Victa Mower, black box flight recorder and the Squatter board game.

I've controlled three out of four of these on foreign invented alcohol. Just my small contribution to the global economy.

@ Brad: If your IQ ever hits 70, you should sell.

Although not a drinker of alcoholic beverages, I know Fosters was founded by 2 Americans from New York who migrated to Melbourne in 1888, and began distributing their alcoholic-based beverages later on that year. It was originally not sold in steel cans until 1957.

I'm sure many of the native fruits and even flowers have been tried in the past.

Why don't you do some research ?

the problem is it would be like "gum leaf vodka" which is still vodka, so has the same issue as Bundaberg rum being rum or victoria bitter being beer. a friend of mine makes his own spirits, such as plum wine and feijoa vodka. also, have you ever chewed on a gum leaf? it isn't the most pleasant taste... very leafy and slightly menthol.

How about grinding up macadamias to make a nutty liqueur, with a smooth creamy sort of texture kind of like Bailey's.

Aw, someone has already done it. http://www.tamborinemountaindistillery.com/product...

Most wines and spirits were invented before we became a nation, so not much chance of inventing a new one.

I bet you didn't know this, but Australia has its very own single malt whisky. It's made in Tasmania.
