Does any one know where the BARGE from sydney to north sydney embarked.?
I know it landed and embarked at LAVENDER POINT for north sydney..but does any one know the exact Sydney embarkment and landing was? note this was before Sydney had its harbour bridge.?
@ MAI....lavender point or bay..is the very end of BLUE ST north Sydney all the way down the hill where you will see a 30 story block of flats you cant miss it, as you come to the end of blue street look slightly to your left ,you will see a ramp that leads in to the water...that's where the old barge use to pull in..or ferry barge..

Well I grew up at North Sydney and never heard of Lavender Point. There's Milson's Point Lavender Bay and McMahon's Point.
Before the Harbour Bridge was built, the North Shore rail line terminated at a station at Milson's Point where Luna Park now stands, and the main North Shore ferry service left from there. The ferries were big two storey affairs. They could well have been barges with a superstructure built on.
That railway line, which joins the main North Shore line at Waverton, is still used to park unused trains overnight but the station no longer exists

well it was not actually a "barge" not as we now know a barge to be
the north shore steamship ferry company operated the ferry service which also carried horse drawn carts/buggies and then later on cars
the actual spot on the city side was at bennelong point which is now exactly where the opera house stands

Have a look at this article from 1911 about ferry traffic.
