How to find out exact mileage of car?
Hi,
Just wondering if I can find the exact mileage of my car, it's a 1989 ford escort mk4. Only reason I want to is because the odometer reads around 43,500 but the thing is the odometer only has enough space for 5 digits. So for all I know, it could be 43,500 or 143,500. I'm just curious if it's possible to find out. I've tried doing a MOT history check online, through the Direct Gov website...but it only goes back to 2006 where it shows that the odometer was displaying 23k-24k miles. Of course I know it's not likely that is has only 43k miles, but It is possible...my 1993 Kia only has 33k genuine miles.
I'm from the UK.
Also I only have the most recent MOT certificate
Good thinking, the engine and bay is pretty clean to be honest, I haven't cleaned it yet either. Bottom of engine is quite a bit gunked up though with oil and that. The exhaust system looks newish though, cant see any rust on it. Body work is in very good condition, only 2 very small dents on the rear & only minor bits of rust around the front passenger wheel arch but hardly noticeable.

Look at the edge of the brake pedal pads and the other pedals. If the rubber isn't worn off very much, it could have just 43 grand on it. If they show a lot of wear, then it is at least 143K.

It is possible, but highly unlikely. The mileage was showing 23-24k in 2006 so if that oddometer reading was first time around it would mean that in the cars first 17 years it had only done an average of around 1400 miles a year, every year for 17 years which is exceedingly unlikely if had more than one owner in that time. if you are lucky, it has done 143k. To Pilsner Man, the rubber pads on the pedals take 2 minutes to change and only cost a couple of quid each ! To Robert M, no matter how many miles it has actually done, the original exhaust system would not last 25 years! It would have rotted away many years past. The amount of sludge shown when removing the oil cap? Modern oils produce far less sludge than oils 25 years back. Visible leaks are of little use in determining mileage.

Its probably on its second time round.

I always use the BRAKE System as a PROOF! I know if the CaLIPERS and PADS are originals or ADDED ON LATER! ALSO the EXHAUST system is a give away as well as the amount of SLUDGE visible with the oIL CA removed! HOW CLEAN and RUST FREE is the engine paint and metals! ANY VISIBLE LEAKS under the hood? GOOD LUCK< and it MAY be true!

you cant, mileage exceeds mechanical odometer. you can make an educated guess using mileage recorded during the vehicles lifetime of papertrail if you can even find it. id guess your at 240,000 or more
