deductible health insurance and bill make no sense?

I was in the hospital and the total cost was 5650... I have a deductible of 2500 My health insurance company says I owe 1514 how is this possible. shouldn't I owe 2500? this was the first claim on my health insurance I have not put anything else towards my deductible.

I've had an $8500 hospital bill knocked down to $1500. So, that doesn't seem out of line.

To correct the above responders; however, the insurance company doesn't "negotiate" a lower rate. The rates are contractual obligations for the hospital (or provider) to be part of the provider network. Once the hospital submits the bill to the network, the network reprices the bill to the contracted rates for each item. Each item is something that would be the same for all providers in a particular area. The provider doesn't have to accept the rates, but if they don't, then they're part of the network.

when you have insurance the insurance company is able to negotiate the rate lower. You need to ask your agent for an explanation. thanks......

It's always nice to pay less than we expect. Enjoy!

Most likely it's because when you have insurance the insurance company is able to negotiate the rate lower. You need to ask your agent for an explanation.

No. Insurance companies negotiable much lower prices than what you see on a hospital bill. You only have to pay what they told you to pay.

Nope. See, insurance companies have pre-negotiated discounts. They made the hospital discount the $5650 down to $1514, and that's all you have to pay.

    You're lucky, don't argue.
