Did the TV show "Fringe" ended neatly? (no loose ends b\c cancelled)?

The last season of the show (season 5) only had 13 episodes - unlike the other seasons that had 20-23 episodes each.

Open ending is fine, but was there an ending or the show just stop abruptly?

There was an ending. The network let them know before they even wrote the final season that they would have 13 episodes and then be done, so they were able to wrap things up. However, the final season is radically different than preceding ones. Personally, I didn't much like it. It wrapped things up neatly but the show changed so much that I had trouble caring about the characters anymore. You can end with the final episode of season 4 and still feel satisfied.

How satisfying it is as an ending may vary from viewer to viewer but the final season formed one storyline which was cohesive and had a planned ending. This wasn't a case of the show abruptly getting cancelled
