Can't get new HP wireless keyboard to work on my Dell Inspirion?

I plugged in the little "thing" in the USB port where the old keyboard plug went - now the new one "registers" and cursor of wireless mouse still moves around BUT, when I hit any of the key's? It doesn't register on the page? How could I have done anything wrong?

    Not trying be a smart alec here but are you sure the keyboard is switched on? These wireless keyboard/mouse combos usually have a physical on/off switch on the bottom of the device.
