Should I buy an external hard drive, or an adapter for an internal one?

I want to expand my storage. I am not going to be carrying it around too much, I just want a place where I can store my games. I have 2 options. I can either buy a USB adapter for the 100GB hard drive from my old, dead laptop or I can buy a 1TB external hard drive which costs about 70 euros (cca 100 USD). I am a bit concerned about the read/write speed of the laptop hard drive because it's like 7 years old and I am going to be running games directly off of whatever I buy. I think that buying a new external hard drive will be a better choice because I will get 1TB of extra storage, USB 3.0, and warranty since it's a new product. I just want to get some more opinions.

Are you doing this with a laptop or a desktop If a desktop then you just need the right SATA cable - one for the smaller connector of the laptop drive. You would also want a frame so you could fix it in place in the desktop.

If a laptop, then you probably cant install it, you wouldn't have a drive bay for it. You would have to use it as an external drive.

As a backup device it would be great to keep your data backed up.

You can use laptop SATA drives in a desktop so you could save some cash & just install it as a secondary drive.

I'd recommend getting a USB 3.0 portable hard drive. That way you can power it down when not in use & don't need a power supply in order to use it.
