I can knit, but I read somewhere that crocheted bags won't stretch like knitted ones.

Crochet bags can stretch more than knitted bags. It depends which fibre you make the bag in. I made a crochet bag from a strong nylon fibre, intended for industrial use, that did not stretch at all. Whether you knit or crochet you can prevent the stretch by making a fabric lining. That makes the bag stronger too.
