Will I make a living off becoming a Chicago Police Officer?
I am going to college down in the city this fall to study and major in Criminal Justice, and plan on becoming a Chicago Police Officer. I've researched a lot of information about salary, requirements, etc. What caught my attention was that I will be starting at only $43k, then one year later staying around $65k.
Is $65,000 enough to live by when living in the city? It seems like it'll be tough.

Wiz Chi no longer has gun control due to a Fed judge overturning states rights.
Sure you can.. Over 12,000 CPD cops. Most live in the nicer parts of the city and raise their families.
Your big worry is actually getting on, especially with the lack of a proper education.
CJ and other so called police related majors, do not help you do well on the written, the oral or if you do get hired later promotion tests.
Future cops need a more generalized education and one that helps you develop your critical thinking skills. If you had such skills your question about making a living would have been answered with your earlier research.
A CPD cop makes more than most college instructors. CPD has a lot of patrol officers who are practicing civil attorneys, they like being cops and do the attorney work part time. Lots of RNs and the like also, All making more, with more satisfaction, as a CPD cop then they would outside of the job.
CPD cops get on going raises by contract, usually 2 to 3 % a year plus extra benefits.. They also get a big compounded bump after 18 months, 5, 10, 15 and 20 years.
The $65,000 is just the basic pensionable pay.All CPD cops get at least $4,000 a year in other pay. And then there is overtime.
If worried about danger, like many others who answered, do nto become a cop anywhere.

You can. Your pay can vary a lot depending on how much overtime you work. How much money you have has not only to do with how much you make, but also how much debt you have and how much you spend. It is great that you plan on getting a college degree. Getting a college degree is one of the best things that you can do. Make the most of your time in college. Get the highest grade point average that you can, participate in a couple extracurricular activities, get a good internship, do some regular volunteer work, don't do anything illegal, and maintain a good reputation. Best of luck!
