I don't understand why my furnace works the way it does?
My furnace sometimes works *** backwards. For instance, when I woke up this morning, it was in the low 30s outside (F) and my furnace wouldn't kick in unless I set the thermostat higher than what normally keep it set at. It's now in the low 40s outside and I've set the thermostat back down to where I normally keep it.
Now, the furnace is kicking in like crazy. I have a professional check the furnace before every heating season, and recently had a new thermostat installed.
I don't get it.

You are probably resetting a lockout when you fiddle with the thermostat. Turning it down then up of off then on will reset a lockout. Even tho you have had Iit looked at previously it has some problem now. Have it looked at again

outdoor temps have little to nothing to do with when the furnace runs unless you have no insulation in your house so how your furnace works is not the only thing you know nothing about. Air movements in your house will effect the thermostat by circulating cooler air to the area where the thermostat is. Most people set their thermostat back at night and you may have an automatic set back on yours. get a seperate room thermometer and keep it next to your chair or where you s;pend the most time. When it is comfortable to you in your spot check the thermostat and see what the actual temp is in that spot Then reset your thermostat so you are comfortable where you spend your time.

It sounds like the thermostat is malfunctioning. The thermostat is what turns the furnace on and off.
