ARGUMENT OF THE TRINITY?!?

For my religion research project, I decided my thesis was going to be

"For centuries, the doctrine of the Trinity has presented challenges to anyone investigating the Christian faith. Although early Christian theologians speculated in many ways on the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, no one clearly and fully asserted the doctrine of the Trinity until around the end of the so-called Arian Controversy. A close examination of the evidence shows that one of the earliest understandings of Jesus’ nature is found in the early narratives and that this understanding is assumed by the earliest Christian writers. From this basis I will trace the development of Christianity to the end of the second century, demonstrating how Christian thought moved from its primitive understanding of Jesus to the foundations of the doctrine of the Trinity."

I have to write a detailed outline of my paper as well as an annotated bibliography with 5 sources, but i can't seem to find any good sources that relate to my thesis. I am in dire need of help and I would be so happy if you could take the time to help me.

I also am confused about how to organize my paper. I was thinking of organizing it into two sections: one about how the Trinity is explicit in the New Testament and the other about how the Trinity has no foundation in the Bible whatsoever. What do you think? Is there a better/easier way to organize it?

Any suggestions will help tremendously!

    This is false :

From this basis I will trace the development of Christianity to the end of the second century, demonstrating how Christian thought moved from its primitive understanding of Jesus to the foundations of the doctrine of the Trinity.

    This is true:

The Trinity has always existed from the beginning of time. God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit are the 3 individuals that make up the Godhead.

See the articles of debate for Nicea and if that is not enough for you, try the details of the St. Athenasius's commentaries.

You'll probably get many different opinions on this, so allow me to at least give some kind of authority for mine.

"The 4th-century articulation of the triadic mystery is at least implicitly the

word of God, hence part of the Christian credo. On the other hand, it is not, as

already seen, directly and immediately word of God."⎯The New Catholic

    Encyclopedia, 1967: vol. 14, p. 304

As a strict Trinitarian I have always taught that, although the Trinity is NOT the DIRECT word of God, it is the IMPLICT word of God in scripture in that we use scripture to prove that each of the Persons is God. Without that proof, there is no Trinity to discuss. However, there are verses in scripture that only REFER to the Trinity; although the DETAILS can only be found the Creeds which are authorized by Matthew 16:18-19 & 18:18. Those verses are: Matthew 28:19, 2 Cor. 13:13, 1 Peter 1:2, John 14:26 & Romans 15:30. Hence, the Trinity doctrine is formulated by using parts of scripture (scriptural proof that each is God) combined with the ramifications of the ability of natural reason to determine the existence of one self aware supreme Being. Thus any other outside influences are irrelevant since the Trinity doctrine would still exist today even without them.

My inexpert opinion: you need to read some of the relevant works authored by "church fathers", as well as some textbook on the early history of the formal establishment of the doctrine (that is: textbook that describes the 4th century formal establishment of the deity of Christ, the deity of the Holy Spirit and the completion of the final doctrine, as well as the dispute between Eastern and Western doctrines).

This will help you with the church fathers:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trinity_of_the_Church...

There are many more than 5 sources there alone (I assume that you are not limited to only 5)..

If your really searching for the truth on the biblical teaching of the trinity...you need to put your faith in christ jesus......................without the spirit to lead you into that truth, all you will have in the end is a research paper full of lies and half truths, never really fully understanding. God loves you so much.

For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one

I am not going to write a detailed paper of my opinions, ideas or beliefs - I am going to simply quote scripture:

the trinity doctrin teaches that: God the Father, Son and Holy spirit are all - equal, eternal, all knowing. Is that scripturally sound?

1.Jesus said: "The Father is greater than I am." NO not equal

2.Jesus is referred to in scripture as: the "only begotten son of God" AND the "first born of all creation." NO he is not eternal he is a created being.

    3. Jesus himself said: "no one knows the day or the hour, not the angels of heaven or the Son but only the Father". NO Jesus is NOT all knowing,,

At John 17:3 Jesus was praying to his "father in heaven" and he referred to Him as the "only true God". If that is the case, how can jesus BE God or equal to him? Nowhere do we see anyone praying to Jesus while in heaven or on earth. Jesus was not praying to himself was he? Of course not. He was praying to "the only true God".

(Deuteronomy 6:4) “Listen, O Israel: Jehovah our God is one Jehovah.

**God is ONE, not three and not three in one.

(Deuteronomy 5:7) You must never have any other gods besides me.

(Isaiah 42:8) I am Jehovah. That is my name; I give my glory to no one else, Nor my praise to graven images.

(Zechariah 14:9) And Jehovah will be King over all the earth. In that day Jehovah will be one, and his name one.

(Mark 12:29) Jesus answered: “The first is, ‘Hear, O Israel, Jehovah our God is one Jehovah,

    (Mark 12:32) The scribe said to him: “Teacher, you spoke well, in line with truth, ‘He is One, and there is no other besides him’;

(1 Corinthians 8:6) there is actually to us one God, the Father, from whom all things are and we for him; and there is one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things are and we through him.

God is ONE and ALONE is Almighty. Jesus is His created Son. Holy spirit is NOT a God but God's power in action. His active force he uses to create to teach and to save.

  • I find it funny you think you know more than 2000 years of Christian theology. Pride is one of hte 7 deadly sins.
