Ya, the molting time can be tough and sometimes scary the first time we see our feathered friend go through this. This time isn't always very comfortable for a bird, especially if he doesn't have another bird to help preen him. You can help by gently preening, or breaking, the pins he can't reach. I do this with my fingers on the back of my yellow sided green cheeks head as well as my blue male parrotlet. I just look for the un broken pins he can't reach and squeeze with my fingers until the waxy area disappears and new feathers make their way out.

Also, try talking him into the bathroom while a warm shower is running, the humidity will sooth his skin. Extra mists or actual showers also help, my birds each take three showers with me a week at least. Also, misting them gently seems to be soothing. The showers really seems to help them break the new feathers through.

Most of all be extra patient, some molts cause them to feel not so nice and they get grumpy too. Good luck!
