"Does anyone think that dark energy could be tapped for propulsion"

Dark Energy is no form of energy, since gravitation is not a force. What is more, the accelerated expansion that Dark Energy drives separates the Universe now, from the Universe then. It is no sort of "stuff" that could be tapped like you mean.

"and if so would it weaken the fabric of space/time causing anomalies?"

It simply cannot get you anywhere you'd want to go. All it can do is send you closer to the cold, dark, infinitely diffuse future we are plunging towards. So maybe you could cause some radioactive elements to decay or something...

could be tapped for propulsion and if so would it weaken the of

    1. Space/time fabric is a Mathematical analogy in Einstein's Equation. So don't treat like a fabric.

    2. Dark energy (as well as Dark matter) also arose in the same equation that is yet to be realisable (to be seen or inferred). I for one wouldn't go about if someone says he has isolated dark energy. May be in the reckoning of energy, we forgot a term that manifests itself at extreme conditions (at speeds approaching that of Light, for instance). Nothing is concrete yet, except some hypotheses. Recall that E=mc² arose in Binomial expansion of "mass" in the Special theory (of relativity).

From your perch on Earth, a tiny of speck of dust whose diameter is hardly 0.0425 Light seconds (1.35 nano Light Years) & even fara far smaller energy levels what you can hope to achieve, how do you leverage things like swinging a star the size of Sun at least (OK Sun for that matter), hmm..m?

So far, we haven't been able to identify it, so.... I'm going to guess no. It *behaves* like a large gravitational source - from outside our known universe; aside from using gravity the way we did with the Pioneer and Voyager probes - swinging by Jupiter boosting their speed - I'm not sure how we could make use of it with our current technology.

  • If dark energy exists, it should be evenly spread throughout the universe. Which means that while overall it is the dominant energy, it is only over huge volumes of space do you get any significant amount. How would you collect several cubic light years of dark energy?

If it exist it can be tapped - if it can be tapped - it can be used for propulsion. It can cause anomalies in space/time but would not cause any weakness. More dark energy will fill in the gaps immediately. Super novas can cause great anomalies in space/time and the fabric fills in with more dark energy, everything is as it was.

It is a far out concept. We don't even find it yet.

We'd first have to know something about dark energy before even thinking about using it for propulsion. Right now, we ain't got a clue as to what it is.
