Atheists, can you explain this to me?

Yesterday, I was having an discussion with an Atheist, and he claimed that 'not all Atheists believe that there's no god'. Explain to me how on earth that's possible, since Atheism is basically the belief that there's no God.

Maybe he's waiting for an answer... believing in something whole heartedly is closing your mind to the other possibilities... i think when he said atheist he meant "scientist" because there could be the possibility of someone creating life (though I think the image people have of this creator would be different) or it could be any number of scientific explanations (asteroids containg bacteria, or a theory called panspermia)

Hope this helps to explain this...

Sure I can explain that...atheism is NOT "the belief that there's no God". It's "the disbelief in all gods"

Sorry but disbelief is NOT a belief.

It is just that we LACK belief in god - and that's totally different from "believe that there's no god".

ONE person said that, so what, stupidity is non-denominational.

he probably means agnostic atheism. It basically means like " i am not sure if god is real or not, but im almost certain he isnt". a lot of these ppl just call themselves atheist instead of agnostic atheist.. maybe that? other than that, idk

There is a subtle but important difference between two kinds of atheism. Positive or strong atheism asserts the claim "A deity exists" if false.

A weak atheists would assert the claim "a deity exists" has not been demonstrated and so rejects the claim without asserting that it is definitely false. In other words a weak atheist has no positive belief in a god but accepts that a god might exist.

In practice I think you will find most atheists are weak atheists rather than strong atheists.

So as to the specific quote "not all Atheists believe that there's no god" I think that is the distinction your atheist friend is making.

For me personally, as a practical matter I would be comfortable making the claim that "unicorns don't exist" if you claimed you saw one. If you pressed me however, I would have to concede that I cannot be a hundred percent certain of the nonexistence of unicorns. I feel exactly the same way about gods.

ALL atheists do not believe in the existence of any god or gods. There is no exception.

The word atheist comes from the Greek. 'Theos' meaning god and the negative prefix 'a' meaning without.

Those who do not follow an established religion but are uncertain about the existence of a god or gods are known as agnostics. This word is also from the Greek. 'Gnosis' meaning knowledge and the 'a' as above.

A person who thinks there may be a god is an agnostic not an atheist.

I see two possibilities, either your friend was very, very stupid or you're lying. Both seem equally plausible.

Maybe he was referring to atheism being a lack of belief.
