Would it be stupid to get a supersports over a sports bike?
I'm looking at getting a new bike in the summer, and I'm trying to decide what to buy.
Bikes are my only form of transportation, so would it be silly to get say an R6, of Daytona 675 over a street triple 675 and bikes of that ilk?

if its your only transportation definitely get one that you are comfortable on .. secondary to that, consider wind protection and ability to carry things ie saddlebags ect .. but for primary transportation i suggest putting the 'cool factor' thing last on the list, you have to live with it and ride it every day, and looking cool will be important less than 1% of the time ..

They are nice bikes, but not particularly suitable for everyday commuting and transportation use. They aren't comfortable, they have tall first gears and don't do well in stop and go traffic, they don't get as good of mileage as other cheaper bikes and they have steep insurance rates.
Is it stupid to get one? No. If you want one and can afford them, the maintenance and the insurance, then go for it. If you are looking for a better commuter, there are far better choices.

When you travel you quickly find out that most of the world gets things done on a 50cc Chinese scooter with a rusted out exhaust. So as far as being practical is concerned any thing more than that is vanity.
The smartest bike I know of that is capable of handleing freeway speed ok is a Suzuki 650 Vstrom. Almost a dual sport, light, quick, a Swiss army knife of a bike.
If you have the skills to ride a sport bike, it's still like buying a sledgehammer to hammer nails. Overkill and acutally makes the job harder most of the time. Most guys can't handle the riding position for over an hour. Most people who ride them are incapable of making the bike to 1/4 of what it can do. But like a Harley I suppose it makes a nice fashion statement even if you have no idea where the nearest track or snakey canyon road is.
Keep in mind that a good rider on that Suzuki 650, or even a 250 ninja, will smoke the average guy on a 600rr. The bike doesn't make the rider.

Sorta silly unless you like paying for higher insurance rates and want to take the bike to the track on occasion.
The Street Triple is a nice bike and with a couple of simple mods it can perform better on the street than the Daytona will. BTJMO
